Mix it in with their current food over five to seven days, shifting the ratio a bit at a time. Going straight to a full bowl of new food is what usually upsets a stomach.
The day-by-day mix
Days 1 and 2. One quarter Little Green Dog, three quarters their old food.
Days 3 and 4. Half and half.
Day 5. Three quarters ours, one quarter theirs.
Day 6 onward. All Little Green Dog.
Keep the total amount in the bowl the same throughout. You're changing what's in it, not how much.
Why bother with the slow version?
A dog's gut bacteria adjust to what they're fed. Change it overnight and the adjustment shows up as loose stools and wind. Dogs with sensitive stomachs feel that more than most.
What if their stomach still protests?
Go back a stage and stay there longer. If day 3 at half and half causes trouble, drop to a quarter for another three or four days before trying again. Some dogs need a fortnight rather than a week.
Firm stools for two days at one stage is your signal to move on.
Should I add anything to help?
No. Keep it plain. If you're switching because you're trying to work out what your dog reacts to, adding toppers, treats or table scraps muddies the result.
What if it doesn't settle at all?
Talk to your vet, especially if there's vomiting, blood, or your dog goes off their food entirely. Our 30-day Sensitivity Promise covers you if it isn't the right fit, so email [email protected] and we'll sort a refund.
Once your dog has settled, you can save 20% on a subscription and keep the same food arriving on a set cycle. A sensitive dog does better without gaps and swaps.
